DohaTribeca Festival honore le cinéma algérien

Un vibrant hommage sera rendu au cinéma algérien au cours de la 4e édition du Doha Tribeca Film Festival (du 17 au 24 novembre 2012). Un événement organisé conjointement avec l’Agence algérienne pour le rayonnement culturel (AARC) avec le Doha Film Institute

Cette rencontre de premier plan, créée en 2009,  s’est affirmée comme un rendez-     vous important de l’agenda mondial des festivals de cinéma, grâce à une organisation impeccable, soutenue par un budget conséquent, et une ouverture dynamique sur les expressions actuelles du septième art dans le monde.

L’hommage au cinéma algérien constituera l’un des points forts de cette édition. Il comprend plusieurs volets et, en premier lieu, un focus sur la filmographie algérienne, représentatif de la diversité de ses thématiques et styles. Ainsi, seront projetés, dans ce cadre, Le Vent des Aurès (1966) de Mohamed Lakhdar-Hamina, La Nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua (1977) d’Assia Djebar, Omar Gatlato (1976) de Merzak Allouache et Roma oula n’touma (2006) de Téguia. Par ailleurs, La Bataille d’Alger de Gillo Pontecorvo recevra un hommage appuyé de la communauté du cinéma au Sony Open Air Cinema sur l’Esplanade du Qatar. L’hommage au cinéma algérien comporte deux autres évènements.

Une exposition de 45 affiches de films algériens au Katara Art Center. Il s’agit d’affiches réalisées par des artistes, tel le peintre Mohamed Khadda ou le bédéiste Slim, et qui font partie de l’ensemble des affiches numérisées dans le cadre de l’opération menée par la Cinémathèque Algérienne avec le soutien de l’AARC. L’exposition durera un mois (du 15 novembre au 15 décembre).  Un grand concert du compositeur et musicien algérien, Safy Boutella, qui, sur son répertoire de musiques de films, dirigera l’Orchestre Philharmonique du Qatar, composé de musiciens émérites de ce pays comme du monde entier. L’évènement aura lieu le 22 novembre lors de la Cérémonie officielle de remise des Prix du Festival.

Par ailleurs, il faut souligner que les œuvres de plusieurs réalisateurs algériens, toutes datées de cette année, ont été sélectionnés en compétition officielle par le jury du Festival de Doha. Il s’agit, dans la catégorie Longs métrages, de Le Repenti de Merzak Allouache et de Good Bye Morroco de Nadir Moknèche. Dans la catégorie des documentaires, figurent Fidaï (1976) de Damien Ounouri, sur un combattant de la guerre de libération nationale, et Ô mon corps ! (2006) de Laurent Aït Benalla sur le grand danseur et chorégraphe algérien Abou Lagraa. Ainsi, la présence de l’Algérie au Doha Tribeca Film Festival apparaît, d’ores et déjà, comme un élément marquant de cette édition.

As the Doha Film Institute’s annual celebration of all things film, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) is a community-minded event that showcases the best of Arab and international cinema.

Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF) is Doha Film Institute’s annual international film festival and is part of DFI’s year round initiatives dedicated to creating a film culture and industry in Qatar. A cultural partnership between DFI and New York’s Tribeca Enterprises, DTFF is committed to supporting and showcasing Arab films and talent in both cities, and to encourage the exchange of global storytelling.

Launched in 2009, DTFF is a community minded international film event, focused on engaging local Qatari audiences in world cinema appreciation, and showcasing emerging and auteur talent from the MENA region.

DTFF 2012 will run from the 17th until the 24th of November. The Arab Film Competition for DTFF 2012 will consist of a Narrative Feature category, a Documentary Feature category and a Short Film category. Both the Documentary and Narrative Feature categories will have Best Director and Best Film Awards. The Shorts Competition will award a prize for Best Film. In addition, Official Selection films in the Arab Film Competition and the Contemporary World Cinema section are also eligible for Audience Awards in the Best Narrative and Documentary categories.

In addition to the official film programme, DTFF highlights also include Family Day; dedicated to connecting families through film enthusiasm and education, and the return of the Made in Qatar section which continues to support the country as a platform for filmmaking.

Bono dénonce la corruption dans le monde

La rock star irlandaise Bono a déclaré mercredi que la corruption était le fléau « le plus meurtrier » sur le globe, lors d’une conférence sur la pauvreté au siège de la Banque mondiale (BM) où il   s’est également inquiété de l’impact du « mur budgétaire » aux Etats-Unis.

« Tout le monde ici sait que la corruption est actuellement le plus grand   meurtrier de tous, pire que le sida, la tuberculose ou la malaria« , a déclaré   le leader de U2 et co-fondateur de l’organisation non-gouvernementale ONE, qui   lutte contre la pauvreté « Il ne s’agit pas simplement de corruption au Sud de l’Equateur mais également d’idées corrompues au nord de l’Equateur et même de corruption réelle   au nord de l’Equateur », a déclaré Bono à Washington lors d’un échange d’une   heure avec le président de la Banque mondiale Jim Yong Kim.

Selon Bono, qui a truffé son intervention de bons mots, garantir la  transparence serait le plus grand « accélérateur » pour la lutte contre la   pauvreté.   Devant une audience conquise, la rock star a également dit redouter les conséquences sur les pays pauvres du « mur budgétaire » qui se profile aux   Etats-Unis et qui désigne la cure d’austérité forcée qui menace le pays d’ici à   la fin d’année faute d’accord au Congrès.  « Il y a tellement de souffrances venant du ralentissement économique, de la   récession et il y ce « mur budgétaire » qui est une vraie menace », a déclaré   Bono, ajoutant que plusieurs centaines de milliers de personnes dans le monde   verraient leur programme d’aide réduit si cette menace se concrétisait.  « Nous savons qu’il faudra des coupes budgétaires, mais pas des coupes qui   coûtent des vies », a-t-il déclaré.  AFP

 Even Bono is worried about the fiscal cliff. The lead singer of Irish band U2 says spending cuts that hit in January would devastate programs to help the world’s poor, leading to more than 60,000 deaths.

“There’s real jeopardy,” Bono said Wednesday at a discussion at the World Bank with bank President Jim Yong Kim. “I’m still terrified of people wrestling the wheel of this mad lorry that they’re driving off the cliff.” Sequestration — a package of automatic spending cuts set in motion last year — would slash funding for U.S. programs grouped in the federal budget as “international affairs” by 8.2%, or $4.7 billion, in the current fiscal year. Bono said that includes about $2 billion from anti-poverty programs, such as treatment for HIV/AIDS, on which he focuses at his anti-poverty advocacy group, ONE.

“We know there’s going to be cuts,” he said. “We understand that. But not cuts that cost lives.”Bono spent Tuesday making the rounds in Washington to press leaders in both parties to avoid going over the fiscal cliff and protect antipoverty programs. He met with Vice President Joe Bidenand other White House officials, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) and numerous other senior lawmakers. He said Wednesday he’s “at least encouraged by the commitment” from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to supporting antipoverty programs included in the foreign-aid budget, which accounts for less than 1% of the overall federal budget.

Bono cited data from the American Foundation for AIDS Research that budget sequestration would eliminate HIV/AIDS treatment for 276,500 people and could lead to 63,000 more AIDS-related deaths and 124,000 more children becoming orphans. The group also estimates as many as 11,000 more deaths from tuberculosis and 6,500 additional deaths from malaria due to the cuts. (Sequestration would also cut funding to other development programs, including for nutrition and food security.)

At the event Wednesday, Bono praised the World Bank’s efforts to accelerate reductions in extreme poverty around the world. Dr. Kim and other development officials maintain that providing aid for health, education and social-protection programs helps create more emerging economies, like the ones in Latin America, Asia and Africa that have held up global economic growth in the past five years. “For us to pull back now I think has to be understood as undermining the foundations of future growth of the global economy,” Dr. Kim said. Bono put it more simply: Without recent growth from emerging countries, “we would be f—–,” he said, whispering that last word. “We owe them. Le groupe australien INXS splitte

Le groupe de rock australien INXS, créé en  1977 et auteur de plusieurs succès à la fin des années 80 et dans les années 90, a décidé de se séparer, a rapporté lundi la presse, quinze ans après le suicide de son chanteur charismatique, Michael Hutchence.

Le groupe, qui a vendu plus de 30 millions d’albums, a annoncé la nouvelle   lors d’un concert à Perth (ouest de l’Australie) dimanche soir, où il se   produisait avec le groupe américain Matchbox 20, selon la presse locale. Le batteur Jon Farriss a déclaré: « j’en ai les larmes aux yeux ». Avant que  le groupe entame un de ses plus gros succès, « Need you tonight », selon le site  internet de Perth Now. L’entourage du groupe australien n’était pas joignable mais les réseaux   sociaux fourmillaient de déclarations d’adieu.

« Ils vont me manquer, les gars d’INXS« , a ainsi écrit le chanteur de Matchbox 20, Rob Thomas, sur son compte Twitter.  « C’est ainsi que cela finit, pour le moment et pour eux. Baisers », a tweeté  pour sa part JD Fortune, qui avait occupé un temps la position de chanteur au   sein du groupe, après le suicide de Michael Hutchence. Hutchence avait été retrouvé mort dans la chambre d’un hôtel de Sydney, en 1997. Il laissait une fille, Tiger Lily, dont la mère, Paula Yates,  présentatrice de télévision britannique et ex-femme du chanteur Bob Geldof, a   succombé à une overdose en 2000. Depuis la mort de Hutchence, INXS a engagé plusieurs autres chanteurs mais le groupe n’a jamais retrouvé le succès des années 90. AFP

 INXS reportedly call it quits after 35 years

Iconic Australian rockers INXS have called time on their music career, announcing at a gig in Perth on Sunday night that they were playing their last concert together

According to the Perth Now website, drummer Jon Farriss announced the news that the group is disbanding and admitted, “I’m getting teary,” before playing one of INXS’ biggest hits, « Need You Tonight. » There has been no formal statement from the band since. Perth was the last date on an Australian tour, supporting U.S. band Matchbox20. INXS became the pin-up boys of Australian rock after forming in 1977, selling 30 million albums worldwide, their success fueled in no small part by the charismatic performances of legendary frontman Michael Hutchence and his untimely death in a Sydney hotel room 15 years ago.The original band members — the Farris brothers, Andrew, John and Tim; Garry Gary Beers; and Kirk Pengilly — decided to play on after Hutchence’s death, bringing in New Zealander Jon Stevens as lead singer, and flirted with a number of others, including Terence Trent D’Arby and Cold Chisel’s Jimmy Barnes. They were the focus of CBS reality show, « Rock Star: INXS » in 2005, to find a permanent frontman, which was won by Canadian JD Fortune.

In September 2011, Fortune was replaced by Irish singer Ciaran Gribbins. “We do what we love to do, and that’s play music together. And we haven’t stopped. James Bond s’affiche à Alger

Sous les auspices du label néerlandais qui mousse, Heineken, une projection privée du tout nouveau James Bond intitulé Skyfall  et ce, jeudi soir à la salle Hamma de l’hôtel Sofitel d’Alger au grand bonheur des VIP et autres chanceux.

C’est dans une fête à tout casser…la baraque ! Une fiesta, une teuf, une party en l’honneur du  retour, l’espion de sa Majesté. La gloire nationale de l’Union Jack. L’enfant terrible de Ian Flemming. Et surtout, à l’occasion de la célébration  ses 50 ans. Et toutes ses dents et dons de vieux brisquard. Skyfall, distribué en Algérie par MDciné, le 23^e opus de James Bond célèbre les cinq décades retraçant les tumultueuses missions et autres opérations de l’agent…provocateur 007.

Un cocktail explosif et très « show » avec en prime des « James Bond Girls » aux jambes interminables. De la bonne musique « jamesbondienne » distillé, sans jeu de mots, par un groupe venu de France reprenant les titres caractéristiques Skyfall d’Adèle, Golden Eye de Tina Turner ou encore A View To Kill de Duran Duran ainsi de la disco et dancehall. Et de surcroît, un numéro hallucinant de barmen-jongleurs de shakers. Et ce, dans une décoration de circonstance . Les 23 affiches de films et les fresques murales représentants les acteurs ayant interprété James Bond comme le pionnier Sean Connery, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan et Daniel Craig.

Le frais émoulu James Bond, campé par le sec, athlétique, torturé et fragile, Daniel Craig (Casino Royale et Quantum of Solace)-jamais deux sans trois-, est une franchise britannique et une nouvelle et vertigineuse aventure. L’insigne honneur, cette fois-ci est revenu, au réalisateur Sam Mendes (American Beauty) de s’y essayer pour ne pas dire de « s’y coller ». Un exercice laborieux dans le quel Sam Mendes a respecté et voire innové de par sa touche personnelle est personnalisée. Avec la fameuse trame des adjuvants et opposants, les équilibres et déséquilibres. Avec en prime, des ingrédients filmiques, le légendaire flegme et humour noir so british ! Un univers plutôt sombre avec des fulgurances urbaines et pastorales et bucoliques mettant en exergue la beauté triste des Highlands de l’Ecosse. Anarchy In The UK  comme diraient des Sex Pistols. Skyfall sera à l’affiche, cette semaine à Alger.

Skyfall Has Huge Friday On Its Way To Biggest Bond Opening Ever

Skyfall has been a gigantic hit overseas for two weeks already, so the question upon its North American debut this weekend wasn’t whether or not it would be big, but just how incredibly gigantic it might be. The result is good news for Bond fans and especially the movie’s distributor, Sony. Skyfall made an estimated $32 million on Friday, which sets it up for an $88 million weekend and make it the biggest-opening Bond ever, by a wide margin.

The second-biggest was actually Quantum of Solace, which made $67.5 million back in 2008 but went on to be the most unloved Bond of the Daniel Craig run. That won’t be a problem for Skyfall— according to Deadline, the movie received an A CinemaScore form audiences, and is receiving tons of rave reviews like this one all over the place. The movie even score big on Thursday sneak peek screenings and Friday midnights, making $4.6 million from the Thursday night IMAX showings alone. On 3,505 screens in the U.S. and Canada, Skyfall is opening wider than ay Bond movie before it– but clearly they’re making it worth that big expansion.

The movie’s other major release is opening on just 11 screens, but Lincoln is also a success in its limited way. A $75,000 per-screen average on Friday was higher than what distributor Disney was hoping for, and it could make $900,000 for the weekend in just that limited release. Lincoln will expand wider throughout the holiday movie season, of course, but we’ll see if it can have the same kind of strength when up against the larger, more typical holiday releases.

Meanwhile Wreck-It Ralph, last weekend’s big champion, didn’t stand a chance against Skyfall, but still did pretty well for itself, dropping just 42% on Friday and set to come in a solid #2. We’ll keep an eye on the box office throughout the weekend and have a full report for you on Sunday.
